About the game
"Dialect effect" is a virtual reality game that is aiming to help in learning different languages. The project was executed at Savannah college of Art and Design-Collaborative Learning Center- VR Lab. In this version we aimed to make a vertical slice of how to teach a certain language which is the Chinese Mandarin language. This first level is happening in a traditional apothecary in China.
The project took 6 months of realization. Our target group is mainly youth generation, and anyone who is learning this language, and wants to practice on it in an interactive environment that involves possible situations. The player then is getting the chance to listen, read and speak the language.
What is unique about this game, is not just the cultural context that we put the user in, but also the sound recognition and interaction where s/he speaks the language correctly. The story is involving characters from the Chinese myth and history, the gaming element, and narrative line that connects the player through the different levels of the game.
We spent 4 months of researches and pre-production phase to be able to come up with such a powerful and solid idea. A team of 22 of the best students at SCAD, were collaborating together. In the first phase, we were all working on the research, possible stories, narrowing down, visual research, and prototyping. It took a long shot, before finally we got satisfied with the concept, the idea and technical realization. And in 2 months all of us were working tediously to make everything and put them together to produce this game.

My Role
I was contributing in this project since the beginning of the first phase. As the project was developing, as team members, our roles were shifting. I started with researching and generating ideas and concept with the team. Then I did the sketch storyboard of the user experience in the game.
As the production started in the second phase, I became the animation team leader of a 5 members team, and animator. Our role was to design, model, rig, texture and animate the main character "Dr. Tong". I was also organizing and making sure that the animation production pipeline works smoothly, and works well between the different software programs and teams. |
